In Memoriam: David Hogness
November 17, 1925 - December 24, 2019
Emeritus Professor of Developmental Biology and Biochemistry

David Hogness was one of the founders of the Department of Developmental Biology. We will pay tribute to David, his life and his many achievements during a memorial service.

Dear Friends,

Dave’s Memorial will be held on Friday, February 21 in room LK130 in the Li Ka Shing Center at the Stanford University School of Medicine (291 Campus Drive, next door to the Beckman Center).  There will be a musical prelude beginning at 4 pm while people are gathering, and the speaking program will begin at 4:30.  A reception will follow in the 3rd floor lobby of the Beckman Center. We look forward to seeing you there and sharing our remembrances of this remarkable man.

While we had discussed the possibility of an alumni scientific symposium on the following Saturday, it proved infeasible to organize such an event given the short timeline.  However, there will be informal gatherings of Hogness lab alumni on Friday evening after the reception and on Saturday morning.

Thanks to those of you who have already sent pictures.  If anyone else has pictures to contribute, please email to galitz@stanford.edu.

Sincerely,
Anne Villeneuve, Will Talbot, Mark Krasnow, Phil Beachy, Peter Hogness and Chris Hogness

The Memorial will be held in room LK130 in the Li Ka Shing Center, 291 Campus Drive, Stanford. The Reception will be held next door, in the Beckman Center (279 Campus Drive), 3rd Floor Lobby. These locations are indicated in red on the map.

Visitor parking:

Visitor parking (pay per space) locations are indicated by yellow squares on the map.

We recommend that most visitors park in:

  • the Roth Way Garage or surface parking on Roth Way or Lomita Drive, near the Cantor Arts Center (if entering campus via Palm Dr. or Galvez), or
  • the Stock Farm Garage or surface lot L-17 (if entering campus via Junipero Serra or Stock Farm)

It is a 5-10 minute walk from these parking locations to the memorial venue.

For visitors with difficulty walking, there is a small lot (L-15) adjacent to Li Ka Shing and Beckman (indicated in blue on the map, enter via Foundations Way) where vehicles with disabled placards may park. (There may also be a few additional visitor spaces available here, but they tend to be full.)

We want to make sure that everyone who wishes to attend is able to do so. If you have any concerns about accessibility, please contact Anne Villeneuve (annev@stanford.edu) or Cammy Kao (cammy@stanford.edu) and we will look into making necessary arrangements.

Hogness Lab Alumni and Friends may continue telling Dave stories, accompanied by food and drink, at an informal gathering Friday evening after the reception at the home of Anne Villeneuve (annev@stanford.edu) and Stuart Kim, 956 Mears Ct, Stanford.

There will also be Hogness Lab Alumni brunch from 9-11 am Saturday morning at the home of Phil Beachy (pbeachy@stanford.edu) and Kati Andreasson, 928 Mears Ct, Stanford.
